The Fertilizer Institute Voices Support for Agriculture Research in the Next Farm Bill

March 17, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) President Chris Jahn issued the following statement on the House Committee on Agriculture Subcommittee on Biotechnology, Horticulture, and Research hearing on agriculture research in the next Farm Bill.

“TFI commends Chairman Rodney Davis (R-IL) and Ranking Member Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) for holding today’s hearing on Agriculture Research in the next Farm Bill. The Fertilizer Institute’s (TFI) members and our scientific partners with the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) are strong supporters of 4R Nutrient Stewardship: choosing the Right Nutrient Source to apply at the Right Rate at the Right Time and in the Right Place. Our member companies are leading the way in the development and implementation of new technologies and scientifically-based nutrient management for agricultural cropping systems to better meet social, environmental, and economic goals.

Research is at the heart of this work. With a 5-year, $7 million commitment, the industry has created the 4R Research Fund. This organization has provided much needed resources to measure and document the positive economic, social and environmental impacts of 4R nutrient stewardship.

Continued funding and the ability to augment public funds with private funds is essential to meeting the research needs of the industry and society. TFI looks forward to working with Chairman Davis and Ranking Member Grisham and the members of the Committee to ensure a successful re-authorization of the Farm Bill.”

TFI members provide nutrients to help American farmers nourish the nation’s crops, and ensure a stable and reliable supply of food, fuel, and fiber.   The nation’s fertilizer industry including producers, importers, retailers, wholesalers and companies that provide services to the fertilizer industry is one of the world's largest, and makes a tremendous contribution to U.S. economic growth. The industry generates more than $155 billion in economic activity, and directly employs more than 88,000 Americans in quality high paying jobs.
