Statement by TFI on the Confirmation of Alex Acosta as Secretary of Labor
WASHINGTON, April 28, 2017 — The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) President Chris Jahn issued the following statement on the Senate’s confirmation of Alex Acosta as Secretary of Labor.
“TFI commends the Senate for its vote to confirm Alex Acosta as Secretary of Labor. Mr. Acosta’s distinguished service and proven leadership in both the public and private sectors make him genuinely qualified for this important position.
“The U.S. fertilizer industry is one of the world’s largest and makes a tremendous contribution to U.S. economic growth, employing American workers in manufacturing, wholesale, and retail agribusiness sectors. Our industry generates more than $154 billion in economic activity, and we directly employ more than 88,000 Americans in quality high paying jobs.
“TFI and our members are committed to ensuring safety within and beyond the confines of our facilities and distribution networks. The fertilizer industry actively promotes safety in the communities in which they operate, and this commitment to safety is the reason our industry formed ResponsibleAg. ResponsibleAg assists fertilizer retailers with compliance of federal environmental, health, safety, and security rules regarding the safe handling and storage of fertilizer products. The program provides participants with a federal regulatory compliance audit, recommendations for corrective action where needed, and a robust suite of resources to assist in this regard.
“We look forward to working with Secretary Acosta to ensure a balanced approach that produces economic growth and continues to promote safety of not just workers, but the communities they operate in.”
