WASHINGTON – The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) commends members of the U.S. Senate for acting in bi-partisan fashion today to approve S. 3042, the “Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018.” TFI extends its thanks to Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) and Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) for working collaboratively in support of farmers and rural economies across America.

TFI is pleased that both the conservation and research titles in the bill recognize the importance of 4R nutrient management planning and 4R-based research. 4R Nutrient Stewardship (using the right fertilizer source, applied at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place) provides a framework to achieve cropping system goals, such as increased production, increased farmer profitability, enhanced environmental protection and improved sustainability.

“The Farm Bill approved by the Senate today is good news for the farm economy and the environment,” said TFI President and CEO Chris Jahn. “Our farmer customers face a challenging market landscape, and this legislation shows that members of the Senate understand this pressure and are committed to supporting farmers and their efforts to preserve and protect precious natural resources while maintaining a profit from their hard work.

“We are extremely pleased to have language supporting 4R Nutrient Stewardship in both the House and Senate Farm Bills and we look forward to working with leaders in both chambers to get a bill that retains these important provisions to the President’s desk before September 30,” Jahn concluded.
