The Policies

Rail transportation plays a vital role in the delivery of crop nutrients. In fact, the majority of anhydrous ammonia, one of the most economical and efficient sources of nitrogen for farmers, is transported by rail car.

Each rail tank car can carry 80 tons of ammonia, which in turn produces approximately 128,000 bushels of corn. That one rail tank car also carries the same amount of ammonia as four truck cargo loads. That fact makes rail transportation the safest and most efficient way to transport ammonia. As a result, TFI and its members are engaged in a number of policy and regulatory issues that may impact the movement of anhydrous ammonia and other crop nutrients by rail transport.


Tank Car Committee Shipper Petition

TFI supports the authority of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to set uniform national tank car standards.


Interim Tank Car Service Life

TFI supports a proposal to extend the service life of toxic by inhalation (TIH)-compliant tank cars from 20 to 50 years.


Rail Hazmat Liability

TFI supports upholding the railroad’s common carrier obligation combined with fair and reasonable rates for the fertilizer industry.


Hazardous Communication Standard and the Labeling of Bulk Packages

TFI supports DOT jurisdiction over the labeling of bulk packages while in transport.


Empty Tank Car Tariff

TFI opposes the railroad’s ability to place tariffs on the movement of empty railroad cars.


Competitive Switching

TFI supports competitive switching, which gives qualified captive shippers that are paying very high rates the opportunity to seek a competitive bid from a second railroad in the vicinity of the shipper’s sole-served facility.
