Safety is a top priority for us and our partners in the fertilizer industry. Following the 2013 tragedy of the West, Texas fertilizer retail facility explosion, we’ve made great strides to ensure fertilizer products are stored and transported safely and securely.

Over the past year, we’ve implemented some new initiatives to further demonstrate the industry’s commitment to safety and security, as well as the safety of fertilizer employees at every stage of the supply chain.

By partnering with the Agricultural Retailers Association (ARA) we created ResponsibleAg, an independent not-for-profit organization designed to support fertilizer retailers’ compliance with federal safety and security regulations. The goals of ResponsibleAg are to improve safety and security associated with the storage and handling of fertilizer products, support compliance with federal laws and regulations, and ensure the safety of employees, customers and communities, while serving the need for crop nutrients.

We also partnered with ARA to develop “Safety and Security Guidelines for the Storage and Transportation of Fertilizer Grade Ammonium Nitrate at Fertilizer Retail Facilities.” The guidelines outline best practices for the safety and security of fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate in storage and transportation. We created the document to fill the void in emergency response guidance specific to ammonium nitrate fertilizer at retailer fertilizer facilities. In addition to outlining storage and handling regulations, the guidelines include recommendations for first responders in the event of a fire or emergency.

In addition to these new initiatives, we offer many more safety and security resources on our website and information on ammonium nitrate:
