Statement by The Fertilizer Institute President Chris Jahn on the Kick-Off of the Congressional Fertilizer Caucus
WASHINGTON, Feb. 28, 2017 — The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) President Chris Jahn issued the following statement on the kick-off today of the Congressional Fertilizer Caucus.
“TFI could not be more pleased that the Congressional Fertilizer Caucus will be led by four outstanding Co-Chairs in the new Congress, Congressman Dan Newhouse (R-WA), Congresswoman Kathy Castor (D-FL), Congressman Frank Lucas (R-OK) and Congressman Jim Costa (D-CA).
Commercial fertilizers feed the crops that feed the world. While often underappreciated, commercial fertilizers literarily make it possible for farmers to provide a safe and abundant food supply. Without fertilizer, crop yields would only be half of what they are. Not only is fertilizer essential to growing all crops, but our industry is also a significant economic force, supporting jobs in every state in the nation.
The fertilizer industry contributes over $65 billion in direct benefits to the U.S. economy, and our companies employ close to 90,000 people. In the home states of our Co-Chairs, the fertilizer industry accounts for over 14,000 direct jobs and contributes nearly $13 billion in economic impact.
The Congressional Fertilizer Caucus is a great opportunity for us to share this positive story with Members of Congress and for them to engage on the challenges facing our industry and to learn about our commitment to sustainability. Through the Caucus, Members of Congress will learn more about our efforts to address water quality and nutrient runoff through the 4R program, and our efforts to promote the safe storage and handling of fertilizers through the ResponsibleAg program.
We thank the Caucus Co-Chairs for leading the Congressional Fertilizer Caucus, and look forward to working with them and the 115th Congress.”
