TFI’s Commitment to 4R Nutrient Stewardship
The fertilizer industry supports the sustainable use of its products through the 4R Nutrient Stewardship framework. 4R Nutrient Stewardship – use of the right nutrient source at the right rate, applied at the right time and in the right place – considers the economic, environmental and social aspects of nutrient management and is an essential component of sustainable fertilizer use. The 4R Framework is scalable and is being utilized worldwide in both local and large agricultural systems.
The fertilizer industry supports its farmer customers with products and services to ensure that fertilizers are used sustainably. In 2021, TFI announced an industry-wide commitment to reaching 70 million U.S. acres under 4R Nutrient Stewardship management by 2030.
What are the 4Rs?
By controlling fertilizer source, application rate, timing and placement, farmers can be profitable and protect the environment.
Right Source
Selecting the right source involves evaluating and responding to a number of factors including soil physical and chemical properties, blend compatibility and the availability of on-farm sources of nutrients
Right Rate
Involves assessing plant nutrient demand, soil nutrient supply including the availability of nutrients in manure, composts, crop residues and more.
Right Time
Includes assessing timing of plant nutrient uptake as well as the dynamics of soil nutrient supply.
Right Place
Positioning needed nutrient supplies strategically, so that plants develop properly and achieve their yield potential.
4R Research

The Fertilizer Industry has a rich history of supporting science and research to help us to better understand plant nutrition, soil fertility, and 4R Nutrient Stewardship. Visit our 4R Research Page to learn more about our research program.
4R Advocates

The 4R Advocate Program began in 2012 to elevate the importance of 4R Nutrient Stewardship. Since its inception, the program has recognized 120 farmers and agricultural retailers who manage over 290,000 acres in 25 states.
